The importance of self-care

When was the last time you took some time for yourself?

Have you ever planned to have a relaxing bath, pamper yourself or treat yourself to something but don’t get around to it because of outside factors, such as being too busy or worrying about finances?

The thing is, those outside factors are always going to be there. Meanwhile, you’ll just keep putting off looking after you. And you are the most important person to look after. Self-care has a massive effect on your well being and our mental well being is the single most precious thing we have.

Self-care is different for everyone. Basically, it’s what makes you feel safe, confident, happy, accomplished and calm. And don’t underestimate the power of little things.

Here are some examples that I use for personal self-care:

Environmental
Making the room cosy with lamps and candles
Using scents such as incense or essential oils
Putting on some relaxing, upbeat or favourite music

Self-confidence
Pampering with a face mask
Painting my nails
Exercising/going to the gym
Wearing an outfit I feel good in

Accomplishments
Writing doable to-do lists and ticking off as I complete it
Complete something towards my goals (ie, write a poem)

Calming
Take a hot bath or shower
Have a cup of tea or hot drink
Use cosy blankets/clothing
Meditate
Stretch/do some yoga
Take a walk

Happiness
See a friend/be social
Spend time with loved ones

Basically…
Do what makes you happy!

There are so many things you can do to make you feel less stressed/anxious. You could make your lunch or set your clothes out the night before a work shift to start your day without a rush. You could practice mindfulness right before bed and right after waking to set and end your day calm. But everything that will help you recover is personal to you. Find what works, experiment, learn about yourself and what you love/what makes you happy.

Most importantly take the time for you!
